Is £4 cheap enough?

Seriously a lot of people rate their stuff.

It is also a good point to start as often you get used to a cheap one and want to upgrade (although as you have found - the old one goes on a hackbike, kids bike or elsewhere)

I have used a few basic ones over the years but currently use my TomTom One, with a cycle mount!

ok I don't take it with me all the time but it is very useful and has the added benefit of not being able to get lost.

I use a free 3rd party tool called tripmaster that gives a more suitable cycle display, with prominent speed, average, max, distance, trip, compass, altitude, angle of incline/decline. It can even log your course with gps co-ordinates that you can then enter into a website to view your route. You can see your speed and altitude along the way etc.

Only problem is remembering to have the battery charged but well worth it if you have one lying around.
I love the idea of riding with my tom tom on the handlebars, turned up loud and watch the faces of the peds:biggrin:

Have the Boardman Altimeter myself, came with the bike (hybrid second hand but unused).

Wouldnt recommend this model (the speedo that is), its less reliable and consistent, i.e. spurious readings every now and again, than the wireless cheapo I bought from Argos a few years ago. It has a habit of resetting itself sometimes when I switch it on; also gave me a max speed of 47.7 mph on my ride home from work the other day. I know this bike is quick, but, come on.....

My point is I think you dont have to neccessarily go for expensive to get a reasonable buy - at c£40 the Boardman is not what I would call cheap, but give me my old Argos special (about a tenner) anyday!

Incidentally, both are wireless which are, I believe, prone to RF intereference and therefore less reliable. Never had any probs with the cheapo, though.

Hope this helps.

Ive got the decathlon rockrider 5.3 and looking for one also. the bike has disc breaks. A friend of mine has the same bike and he bought a cheap computer and found it didnt work. because the sensor was too far away from the wheel. If anyone knows of any good ones thats been used on this bike or one similar then id be interested. I need to start getting an idea of my speeds and real distances.

Though generally its been good not to have one. Ive been cycling where the road takes me without worrying about numbers. Then retraced my route on google maps to see how far i went when i get in

I got the lidl one today. Does everything for £3.99 I want apart from cadence, so will probably get a few more for the other bikes.
Although the bracket only allows you to mount it on the handlebars, and not the stem, which is a shame.

If you really want to go down the cheap, then visil your local Aldi or Lidle, value can't be beat. They normally have at least 8 functions for less than £15,bargain.

I finally got around to fitting the mounts for my Garmin Edge 205 at the weekend and after a spin on the bike with it working i doubt i'l ever go back to coventional bike computers, the Edge is very very good

Make sure you get one that you can toggle 'Auto stop/start' off.

If you want to keep track of the average on a long ride, the average will not be correct if the thing keeps stopping when the bike stops.

I bought one as a stop gap (I want a good computer like an edge so no point in paying out £40-50 only to replace it in a couple of months), its a bit ugly, and the average speed mode cannot be toggled between auto stop start or continuous (it will only run continuous, so you will not get a moving average speed, only an average speed over total journey time) but for £4 there is pretty much nothing to fault.

Easy to set up, I put it on my fixie in the time it took my gf to shave her legs, and this mornings commute gave a distance read of 1.77 mile, this is a 4% error from the google maps route. So with some optimisation of the entered wheel size as I choose a default size (assuming google maps isnt the one at fault) then it should be a good little runner.

Im considering picking up another as a backup (and to get the 2nd mount for another bike) if they have any left today since they are so cheap. Its easy to operate and offers lots of functions, easy to press buttons and a backlight you can trigger with a button.
