Hi

I made a post in the Wanted section over the weekend for a Computer, but with no offers, I may have to go against the grain and buy a new one, everything is normally second hand with me, why buy new when there is so much stuff unused and thrown away!

So what good bassic computers are there? About £20 or £30, so nothing special, something to give my distance, speed and maybe the time of day?

Cheers

Speed distance and time imo is the basic's BUT some don't even offer that, so just double check before you buy.

I'm not surprised you didn't find any second hand, everyone keeps theirs until they stop working. I've had mine for about 5 years and I'll keep using it for as long as keeps working.

I have a Cateye Strada Wireless, about £32, and it works. No heartbeat or cadence data, but I do not want it anyway. There may be better ones out there.

Happy shopping!

I use the Cateye Micro Wireless, which has, apparently:

  • Current Speed
  • Odometer
  • Clock
  • Maximum speed
  • 2 x trip distance
  • 2 x trip time
As slowbie said, I have no need for cadence or heart rate monitoring.

My kids use a Cateye Vectra Wireless:

  • Current speed
  • Trip distance
  • Odometer
  • Clock
  • Maximum speed
That has pretty much everything other than average speed and 2xtrips, and is about £22 in most places.

I prefer wireless, just because there are no wires.

I've always used Cateye and have found them very good, but I bought one recently and it stops working when it's raining hard, so I don't know if it's just a one off or a general problem!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you really just want the basics, Halfords £9.99 one does

Current Speed
Trip Distance
Clock
Odometer

Alternatively, your LBS will probably have something just as cheap, if not cheaper!

Depends what you mean by good. On my commute bike I have a sub £10 Tesco wired one which has all the standard functions. It's a bit bulky, and only has a bar mount, but what has impressed me with it is that it has kept going through all the crappy winter weather without complaint (as well as sliding off up the road following a spill). My last 2 wired Cateyes both lost the signal at the contacts during downpours.

I bought a wireless one from Decathlon last year about £12-13 and does the job just fine for a basic computer.
Features are -
Speed
Distance
average speed
max speed
odometer
clock
time

Thanks everyone!

I may call in at the bike shop tomorow if it is open when I come home from work! I might go on to work on a bike tomorow, maybe the penny farthing, depending on how I feel in the morning and the weather etc.

I have used a few basic ones over the years but currently use my TomTom One, with a cycle mount!

ok I don't take it with me all the time but it is very useful and has the added benefit of not being able to get lost.

I use a free 3rd party tool called tripmaster that gives a more suitable cycle display, with prominent speed, average, max, distance, trip, compass, altitude, angle of incline/decline. It can even log your course with gps co-ordinates that you can then enter into a website to view your route. You can see your speed and altitude along the way etc.

Only problem is remembering to have the battery charged but well worth it if you have one lying around.
