Hey @Batgirl , that is progress
I love the whole riding alone thing, only ridden with hubby once as you know, but we are planning on persuading grandparents to have kids again in the next few weeks so we can go out together.
I enjoy the peace, and it really clears my head

Wow there was I thinking I was odd for cycling alone.

@Mummy3monkeys Yeah real progress. I was really nervous but they soon went. I have a lot to learn still - like gear changes, I still ride one geared lol but it'll come and we're getting 2 of our kids onto bikes soon so hoping next year we'll be having he odd cycling picnic. ;)

I don't even have a road bike. There is very few people out there slower then me but I'm enjoying it so much! I actually feel the 3 miles each way daily commute in my legs all the time, but I am trying to go fast.
Way to go, sister!

Just a thought - is your saddle high enough? If you sit on the saddle and put the heel of one foot on the pedal (with the pedal at the bottom of its turn), your leg should be pretty much straight. When you then move to the ball of your foot your leg will be just slightly bent. This is the most efficient position and best for your knees. (sorry if you knew this already!)

In another conversation on CC was mentioned that one should not reach the ground when in the saddle. I like the way you've explained it. I always felt I could raise my saddle more but wasn't confident confident enough. I have started raising it slowly (1cm a day) and I might go a bit higher tomorrow and see how that goes. I'll do that heel test when I get on it, to see if I have reached the maximum.

My rides are a 50/50 split between cycling on my own or going with my husband. I worried at first that I would hold him back but our average speeds are pretty much the same whether cycling together or separately

Yes, I've never thought of it as "I can't reach the ground from my saddle" - I think that can sound a bit off-putting, whereas the straight leg thing makes sense as soon as you try it.

I have a feeling that by now Mr G and I should be the same sort of speed over distance. I asked him if he wanted to go on a longer ride and he said he didn't think he could handle that long in the saddle!

Pretty mixed from me - sometimes going out on my own, sometimes with a mate or two, sometimes with a local club's "development rides" (I'm not quick enough for the chaingangs!) and sometimes bigger organised rides like audaxes or forum rides.

I think as we're getting into winter, the "social" riding will taper off and I'll just be snatching quick rides on my own in an effort to keep my fitness from disappearing completely!

It's all different, and I like the variety - if I could only choose one type, I'd find it boring pretty quickly.

True that in the winter you need to be more opportunistic and the best-laid plans gang aft agley.
