Commuter and change of rear wheel

I wonder if someone might be able to help. I have recently purchased a second hand bike, what to change the tyres over as currently have rubbish btwin wheels on my main hybrid but not sure how to check if the wheels will take 8,9 or 10 speed. Currently they have 8 speed on them but the cassettes seem more spaced out than on my btwin bike like they have spacers on them. I dont want to spend a fortune on new wheels as maybe changing jobs soon so looking for a cheap fix. My current wheels have had three spokes broken on then these are wheels I want to get rid of.

An 8 speed cassette will look wider and more spaced than an 9, likewise 10 speed.
If you buy a 9 speed wheel you can usually add a single spacer to make it compatible.

Please let me know if I am talking arse peeps.

8,9 & 10 freehub body all same width (also 7 with a spacer behind the cassette). 11 spd is different - slightly wider.

I think there are several here who could and would help but, for my part (and I suspect others), I am hampered by the lack of clarity in your question. Why don't you have another go, unless the actual question was:
more question is will the whelel will take 9 or ten speed
in which case it's been answered.
Shimano cassette widths:
8 = 35.4
9 = 36.5
10 = 37.2 (with overhang)
