I could see a use for it if you were on a long ride with someone faster or slower than you. You could agree stopping points and keep the other rider aware of how you were getting on.

Lots of people use walkie talkie devices when they go skiing to keep in contact with friends on the mountain.

I can see uses for that, if you read around some of the touring blogs you'll find people have used variations on this to keep in touch.

The pros are not using anything that special, upscale versions of motorola handsets with a wide range of channels quite similar to that which TV productions use.

You can get a basic set and some earpeaces for around the £100 mark that run on two AA's that function well enough as personal radios, I doubt the featured item will be a better price or any where near as robust.

A word of caution with small handsets, no line of sight in hilly areas and you can simply lose the signal at even very close ranges as they are not rebroacasting from any other source.

I don't see the need for communicating in such a fashion on the commute, after all this is the commuting section.
I regularly chat to riders on the commute, but we cycle side by side when we do that

Two tins joined with string would work a treat. And as you have you keep the string taut for it to work, you can guarantee that the distance between the two riders will not become too great.

I have trouble hearing anything from a fellow cyclist within 5 yards of me while out on a ride. Maybe I need the wax from my ears cleaned out

I used to ride with someone who mumbled. As I was only a bit deaf at the time I really didn't think it was me!

I rode miles saying. Yes... Ha ha.....Mmmmm. Without any idea of what he was saying.

We bought some PMR446 radios for the leaders and tail-end charlies to use on our JoGLE, but that was more because we had responsibility for a bunch of kids who were (hopefully) somewhere between the two. Quite useful, but I was amazed that no one has brought out a version with bluetooth headset compatibility.
