I've been thinking about a new saddle...but how does one decide?

I mean, there are so many with so many different shapes?

by sitting on it, on your own bike that you have taken to the LBS with you. Any decent LBS will be happy to swap them around and let you try them out including cycling around on it outside of the shop (useful if you have a partner to leave them behind as a guarentee).
