My like of Colnago is down to History. My super bike was going to be a Colnago Master or similar top spec frame, but I wanted the new Dura Ace 7400, so went for a custom british built frame, but out of the same Italian Columbus SLX. You dont fit shimano to Colnagos.
really? I'd say that a majority have Shimano. Mine's got the groupset and the wheels (but not the headset or the chain). A thing of beauty is a thing of beauty, and Shimano do beauty.

I think, Stu, you underestimate the worth of the Master section. Going round a corner on a C40 was, for an instant, proof that the money was well spent.

The C59 is a thing of beauty. Another one to consider if you want Italian hand made, custom geometry and paint is Sarto. Perhaps not the desirability of the Colnago brand, but Sarto reputedly build many of the pro peleton bikes to look like the sponsored bike offering. A lot cheaper than Colnago too if memory serves. Their website seems to be down at the moment but Facebook is up and running

I don't doubt that Ernesto & team know how to build a great bike, I know I'd be chuffed with a C59, but...There are plenty of other frame builders out there (Legend, Sarto, Parlee, Crumpton, IF, Cyfac.....) who can deliver a precisely fitted and ride-tuned frame to suit the purchaser in ways that even a C59 cannot.

Colnagos are beautiful bikes. Beauty costs money. Someone once told me that the cost of a Colnago paint-job was 30% of the cost of the frame. North Europeans tend towards functionalism; performance over aesthetics. Other cultures, especially Italian culture, place an emphasis on aesthetic considerations. Which do you prefer? Each viewpoint is equally valid.

Regarding custom work, don't Colnago use a lugged-tube carbon construction so they can offer a custom fit?

Stu - the Master section is different, and that difference is what sets the ride apart from other bikes. As far as I know, no other manufacturer uses it. And then again I don't think there's a better fork than the Star.

I persuaded a friend to have a go on mine on Sunday morning. He came back looking kind of wondered-out.

Key word here. Innovation and unique design are qualities not exclusive to Colnago. There are multiple ways to de-fur a feline. And though a C59 can be custom-fit, for those people who don't find one of the 22 regular versions to suit, they don't build a bike precisely to suit an individual rider.
