I went for a ride Friday. 10 mile, hilly loop. Saturday I woke up coughing like an 80 year old who'd smoke 60 a day. Sunday the cough is worse. Bugger!

I don't train, but I once started a 55 mile night ride with a minor chesty cough. It very quickly felt as though my lungs were being irrigated with sulphuric acid...utter misery. I gave up at the halfway stop having been pitifully slow, wheezing horribly. A runny nose isn't too much of a problem for me, but with a yucky cough, I throw in the towel.
Frankly anybody who goes and does vigorous exercise while infected with a cold is an idiot. The risks are well known and it's also well known that improvement in athletes happens during the rest days so why on Earth would you want to double stress your body as well as risking more serious illness?
