Cold feet and other areas (ooh err!)

Just got back from a character building 21 mile ride - conditions far from ideal (3c, wind and rain) and my feet are frozen along with 'other areas' if you know what I mean!

I wore fairly thick wool socks and Bontrager SPD SL shoes and ron hill bikesters.

Does anyone have any recommendations for overshoes and thermal waterproof underwear or boxers please?!

It wasn't quite as cool up here, fortunately.

Undies aren't the best bet on a bike - you need proper padded shorts or, in this weather, padded longs, both of which are fairly close weave anyway. If you are going to wear undies, windproof is what you need, not waterproof. I remember Damart did a 'windstopper' version with a close-weave panel, which was actually very good at keeping the bits warm; just don't have them posted to you at work, because for the next ten years you will also get their autumn catalogue full of half-dressed grey haired women. Again, if you are wearing undies, you don't want a fly in them because the wind will whistle through the gap.

TBH I find it enough to wear a long thermal vest underneath my bib longs. The important thing is tuck the front of it under your tackle before you pull the bib up. Bikesters are a loose fit, so that probably won't stay in place - with lycra it does.

My Dad used to wear the Damart knee length underpants & long vests (I've inherited a few but can't bring myself to wear mens' underpants!) Mind you he was getting on a bit and really felt the cold. He also used to stuff newspaper down his jacket!

Having viewed my Mum's Damart catalogue until she fell out with them, there seem to be youngish things modelling for them nowadays, still wouldn't think anyone could get excited about them as Damart or any thermal underwear is functional rather than flattering!

That didn't stop everyone at work assuming I had sent off for the catalogue because I was too short to reach the top shelf in John Menzies.

If its really cold I wear long johns under my Biksters, if not I wear boxer shorts. I don't want to hijack the thread but are the Biksters finished now? I have been trying to buy a new pair without success.

Oops, looking at my leggings, they are actually 'Altura' winter warmers with reflective bits sewn in.

You can still get RH Bikesters though.. Wiggle do them I believe.

woollen socks
overshoes
winter bib tights
winter sports (windproof front) long boxer-style pants
string vest
merino wool base layer
long-sleeve shirt
winter jacket
light rain jacket (if wet)
silk inner gloves
winter mittens
ear bags
headband
buff
or balaclava, if particularly cold

Before overshoes were invented I used to wrap cling film over my feet (socks) before putting my shoes on. Tried it the other day for the first time in years. Worked a treat.

What size are you after ?

I was looking for large, unfortunately I am short and stout and these things seem to be made for the long and thin. I have just brought a pair of Altura winter cruisers, if they prove to be comfortable I might try some summer cruisers instead of the biksters.
