Coaster wheel jiggle?

Hey there.

I have a single speed coaster brake wheel on my custom bike. The wheel hub on the sprocket side is jiggling a bit and am wondering if this is something I should be worried about? The wheel seems secure, but it does wobble a bit. See the video for a look at what's happening. Cheers!

Hub bearings need adjusting

Definitely hub bearing adjustment required.

Just be aware that on a coaster brake, hub bearing adjustment can also have an effect on the brake operation.

On the more basic types with serrated cones that grab the shell, some play is necessary for the brake (or, more accurately, the drive) to work properly. They also need to be packed with molybdenum disulphide grease or similar. Odd devices.


More sophisticated coaster hubs with a normal freewheel mechanism and separate brake shoes (e.g. Sturmey SRC3, Sachs Duomatic) can be adjusted normally.

Hello there.

Thank you very much for your reply. I have bought a new coaster wheel now as I was worried that the first might break on me. After using the new wheel once, the same things had happened. Please see new video. I am now thinking however that this is something I shouldn't worry about and it is just the 'play' you are talking about. One thing that might have caused it was that the bolt I was using to fasten the brake to the frame of the bike came loose and when I braked the brake arm spun around a bit . The wheel itself had not moved however and it was still secure. Do you think it should be ok to use?
