If you've never ridden in a group before, then it can be easy to under-estimate the difference in effort when drafting someone. I was honestly pretty amazed that I was spending more time on the brakes to keep off the wheel in front of me, than I was peddling like a muppet to keep up. Our group kept getting strung out, but we kept stopping to make sure that everyone was reasonably close by.
One of the things that impressed me with our run was that there were a couple of people who were struggling on the hills. Whenever this happened, another rider would pull in alongside, place a hand on their back and give them a bit of gentle assistance on their way. It's a Sunday group ride, not a competition and you don't win any prizes for dropping people off the back.
