Ethan - that route they do are fast roads and IMO not particularly nice for cycling. Straight down the A56 and back on the A57 :nono:

It would be reasonably easy to up your average (solo) on those roads by 4-5mph.

Come and join a Seamons CC club run on sunday mornings. They have 3-4 level of rides. You will be asked to go with the social ride on the first week, where they probably averaged 13-14mph when I went out with them 3-4 weeks ago. I understand that is a normal pace.

Do what I did. While you're young, get into proper sports that require skill and/or team sports - leave cycling until you're too old for owt else.

If you are determined to cycle I'd just go on the ride with them. What's the worst that can happen ?

I'll take that as a pernicious comment as no-one would say that seriously.

Hahaha. The only thing you'll get on that route is depression...Partington, Irlam, Cadishead, Eccles, Stretford, Salford...take a knife and some pepper spray just in case. One thing is, I bet you average about 25mph...to get it over with quicker

Ah. Causing harm or malicious. Er, no. I was quite serious. Any exercise is good and while someone is young I don't think it's harmful to suggest they try sports that I'm too old to take part in. They can always come back to cycling when they're too old.

I'd like to think that this was said 'tongue in cheek' but I'm not sure. If it was said seriously then you really are talking the biggest load of cr*p ever and clearly have no idea whatsoever. Either way my advice to the OP would be to completely ignore your comments just in case!

I dont have the skill for football or rugby etc. In fact I cant even kick a ball in a strait line! I do like doing things by myself and in my own time which is partially why I enjoy cycling on my own. Mostly I have always been a keen cyclist and never had any interest in taking part in sports. What I am going to do is improve my ability on 2 wheels.

Fine, I'll put your original post down to poor wording.

That's good. We're on the same page dude. People who have no skill or fluidity of movement or dexterity should, in my opinion, take up cycling. It's all good exercise and everyone should play to their own strengths.

What'f I said ? When I've done a 60 mile ride, I get off the bike like Jim Carey in dumb & dumber...completely zombied out with a sore arse, buzzing arms and fixed in the seated position. When I get hold of my tennis or squash racquet and get on court, there is a grace and freedom and it takes so much more ability, guile, touch and thought. I just want Ethan to know that there are much more enjoyable sports that lend themselves more to youth and he can save the cycling for when he's dodging the coffin and he's completely knackered...like me.
