Hey,

I want to commute through the colder weather but I need some advice on clothing.

I have 2 pairs of bib shorts, a long sleeved base later, 2 summer cycling tips and a pair of thermal tights as well as mitts and a full fingered set of mountain bike gloves.

What sort of top would I need? I'd like it to be waterproof as well.

Cheers!

Edit:

Would this be OK?

If it can be bought from wiggle I'd appreciate it, I get discount from BC through them!

If you want a reasonable waterproof winter jacket, I'd look at Altura night vision  A jersey won't be waterproof

I'd recommend a windproof jersey or jacket. You can wear this on cold days and when there's light rain or showers without overheating. Even the most breathable waterproof jackets really are not breathable enough. Then get a cheapish, lightweight waterproof to wear when the weather's really bad. Having said that though, if your commute is less than an hour there's hardly any need for a waterproof at all.

I'd try and get windproof rather than waterproof, staying warm is more important than staying dry. I use a Tenn Outdoors Windblock, which is excellent for cycling, IMO, but others are available, obviously.

Waterproof stuff won't be needed as much as you expect, I haven't used mine in the past 6 months (although I don't commute by bike every day) but a windproof top could be used for the next 7 months.

Winter bib longs for dry cold days and a good warm jacket/gillet.
Leggings and bib shorts (maybe with winter underwear under) and jacket.
Leggings and bib shorts under rain trousers, plus warm long-sleeve jersey under rain jacket.
Overshoes for cold and wet weather, plus warm socks.
One thin (merino) pair of gloves to be worn under cold/wet weather gloves/mitten.
Head band under winter skull cap, and buff around the neck.

I think that covers it.

I can't really afford the expensive stuff - I mean I can shower when I get to college (my gym is over the road, literally!) but I hate being cold and I get cold really easily. I also don't fancy riding home in wet stuff either - not my idea of fun!

It would be nice to spend £100 on a jacket but I can't stretch to it. Quick drying jerseys are probably my best bet.

This might sound a bit cheap but I got my waterproof jacket by subscribing to a cycling magazine. They often do deals when you subscribe and got a £50 jacket for a £20 odd quid subscription...it's actually pretty good as well!!!

I commute in DHB roubaix longs, short sleeve jersey and arm warmers and a waterproof jacket, with a SS base layer and/or merino tights under the longs if its mega cold (although the longs go to about -2 on their own). Shoe covers are a must, as is a buff/skullcap for your head/ears and another for your face if its freezing. Pearl Izumi lobster gloves with thermal liners if its arctic.

I don't worry about keeping the lower half dry as I take underwear/trousers in a covered rucksack (flouro waterproof cover). I used a night vision jacket last winter, but I've just bought a gore oxygen jacket as the altura is mahoosive after I've lost a lot of weight this year

God I forgot to mention glasses. A MUST. I never ride without them, all year. To much debris off the roads and insects to risk it.

It would be helpful if you could get decent cycling glasses with a prescription - I use my normal specs but my eyes were watering like a bitch going down a hill in Richmond Park at 25mph today, Reactolite stylee would be ideal - not really wanting to spend hundreds on Rx Oakleys
