Clipless - first fall

Just had my first fall about an hour ago. Read the sticky extensively, thought I covered all the bases and with supreme confidence built over 4 weeks, headed toward Waterloo. Came to a small junction, steady traffic so slowed down and perfectly unclipped the left shoe in a smooth seamless movement. Complete stop with left foot on the ground. Felt very proud, turned right to catch anyone watchinng this gracefully move and my weight shifted right. Alas the right foot was clipped in and I watched myself fall.

Picked myself up, no injuries to the bike or me. 2 men came over and asked if I was alright. Strangely I felt that I passed some rite of passage.

My last clipped-in fall was going up a one-in-six on a fixie. I just thought - "Oh I can't be arsed with this" fell off and pushed the rest of the way up. I thought it was a victory for commonsense.

You have indeed, it happens to everyone.

The circumstances bear a remote resemblence to my first clipless moment. I had climbed a high hill and decided to stop at the top to admire the view(take a rest!). I unclipped my left foot and tried to put my foot down. However, it was quite a windy day and a gust came from my left and threw me over into a big bed of nettles, which resulted it quite a tingle!!

This indeed a rite of passage. You are now on the way to becoming a "real" cyclist, whatever that means. Glad you had no injuries except your pride. There are always too many people to witness the moment.

Spoke to a mate in the office today and he told me that he always unclips both sides as he comes to a stop. He said that most people unclip the left side to lean against the curb. They forget that the right side is still clipped on. I wonder if others feels the same. Seems sensible.

It happens. Used to happen when I lived at home turning into the garden path, wobble and down. Only happened once on a hill - stopped to adjust something, set off, right foot clipped in and toppled straight over on right side.

In between here and there
Had my first ever this morning, riding a relatively new CX bike and not got used to the toe overhang went to pull off in front of load of traffic and got my clipped in foot jammed between mudguards and pedal mad the mistake of looking down and started an unstoppable tilt towards the clipped side, I was laughing during and after the fall. Quite embarassing really had to wave the traffic on as I composed myself again!

We all do it sometime, still haven't forgotten the time I broke two ribs, then get back on the bike and rode another 35 miles...
