Looks like these work with shoes that already have the holes for both SPD and SPD-SL like the OP but should also work with the SPD adaptor plate, so I can fit to my Adidas Merckx

Ha, that explains it, always wondered what the difference was. I do have a set of the unrecessed ones which I can imagine are possibly only of use for spinning sessions putting the shoes on next to the bike.
