I've got some shimano r540 pedals on my road bike and for the money they are great

Enjoy your choice @TomGuile. A plus with the R540's compared to the majority of SPD pedals is that road pedals have more of a platform than SPD's. Should make for a comfier ride regards feet, I would have thought. Not ever used SL's, so can't really comment.

Just an update, they arrived today. Really pleased with the shoes and pedals. Added bonus is as I'm small, the cleats make me that much taller
