On the bike the only thing I use cling film for is keeping the water out of the Computer. Been wrapping the computer in cling film for years, held in place with an elastic band it works a treat.

The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
I use those blue elasticated plastic overshoe things from the local swimming pool (proffed a good handful ages ago) over a couple of pairs of socks. Combined with overshoes they always keep my feet warm and dry

Good thinking! I have just ordered some on ebay (not having a local pool to source them from ;)) Have used sandwich bags but they are not really very foot shaped .....

I've used sandwhich bags on my feet before and they were fine.

With regard to Cunobelins clingfilm tale, a teacher told us of how he was responsible for sex education at a previous school and crisp packets had been mentioned as being used. I don't think he'd have made it up but can't be sure they weren't pulling his leg.

I tried the crisp packet one, but I ended up having to use the outer bag from a multi pack!

And on a more serious note, I've got some of those surgical latex gloves of the intimate customs examination type, worn under normal gloves they make a waterproof if a bit sweaty barrier.

I'm a service engineer and they work quite well, I have to service greasy gearboxes in barrier control equipment, and they always keep my hands warm this time of year. I'd definately not hesitate to use them on the bike for short journeys, wouldn't want to wear them for six hours though....

Not sure I'd try it. I reckon my feet would sweat like buggery and end up looking like I'd been in the bath too long! Or, like lee says, with trench foot.

Less is more, ime. I've had the somewhat counter intuitive experience, on a long ride, of my feet warming up as the temperature dropped. Perhaps due to my feet sweating during the day and the sweat chilling. So when my feet stopped sweating in the cooler evening temperatures, they warmed up... or perhaps they were so cold that numbness set in and I could no longer feel just how cold they were!

I have used carrier bags on the motorbike and they worked well.

Those blue shoe covers may well work but they are not very shoe shaped, in all honesty.

I have used an unlubricated condom on the GPS before.

I wear Shimano MTB boots for riding in and doubt if neoprene overboots would fit them. Has anyone got a more long term solution?

Go into your LBS wearing your boots and ask if they have overshoes to fit over them. Its what I successfully did when I wanted overshoes to fit over my steel capped work boots.

Had the same problem as you Steve. I wear size 12 (normally size 11) as Shimano sizes are small.

I bought some lycra overshoes (size 10) and wear them over the socks and under the shoe. Doesn' t protect the shoe but keeps feet warm and dry.

Not bothered about the shoe as I have full mudgaurds so they never get wet

I've never heard of the clingfilm thing and I'm certainly going to give it a try. Thanks.
