Clicking sound when pedaling

Ok, so this is my first technical question so please go gentle on me as it's probably a simple answer and I'll most likely get the names of things wrong!

As I mentioned in another thread, I went for my first ride on Wednesday and when I was pedaling, there was a clicking noise that increased or decreased in speed depending on how fast I was pedaling. If I nudged the gear lever it stopped most of the time, but if I changed gear, it normally came back until I nudged the gear lever again.

I had a look when I got home and with not really knowing what I'm looking for all I could really tell was that it sounds like it's coming from the rear mech and that the chain may be rubbing on the cassette in one place. The photo tries to show that but it may not be that clear.

I think, the noise is more like in the following from 20 seconds onwards.

Or am I looking in completely the wrong place, or is it normal to have a noise like that?

Where was the front DR when the pic was taken? ie: what ring?

Sounds like Evans haven't indexed the gears properly, 15 odd miles not really enough for cable stretch. I would try giving the barrel adjuster a quarter or half turn and see if that improves it.

The chain gap looks like it's closing towards the front (upper chainline) which shouldn't be effected by indexing?? But would be effected by the front DR,

Happy to be wrong

My 10SPD 105 just now. Silky smooth

So could it just be a case of things need to bed in so to speak? They did say I get a free service at 6 weeks.

Is the barrel adjuster the one where the cable goes in?

I'll post a picture of the front when I get home as it's still in the same position as when the above was taken. I would have liked to have gone out last night but my rear was still complaining about the night before.

Yes that is the adjuster where the cable goes in to the rear derailleur. It won't bed in it should have worked perfect and then over time the cable stretches and things need adjusting as the cable has stretched out with use and being a fresh cable.

If it is the front it will be making a constant sound as it will be rubbing, clicking from the rear I am almost certain will be the cable needs adjusting. I assume the lever you move that makes it go away whilst staying in that gear is the right hand one for the rear gears? If yes is will be that cable.

My bike did this when I got it (at least I think it is the same noise you have) -t used to sound as though the chain was just trying to shift up onto the next cog.

I re-indexed the gears paying close attention to the cable tension adjustment as per the RD instruction book - now works perfectly with no clicking noise.

Here are a couple more photos. I turned the pedals by hand and I wasn't sure if it was still making the same sound. As long as I'm feeling pants due to lack of sleep rather than coming down with the cold people have had at work, I'm going to go for another ride at the weekend so I'll see how that goes and report back. I have given the barral adjuster 1/4 turn anti clockwise as well.

I think I've worked out what it is. I think it's the chain rubbing on the front derailleur when I'm using the smaller cogs (if that's the word) on the rear.

In the pictures above, I'm on the fourth smallest and the chain is pretty close to the derailleur. On Sunday, if I went to the third smallest the noise would start and then again for the second and smallest at the rear. When I looked down, on the third smallest, the chain was, well looked like, it was rubbing the front derailleur.

Therefore, am I worrying about nothing, or is it just a case of adjusting it as per the video MickeyBlueEyes posted? If I fix it for the smallest, would it then happen on the largest?

Firstly: are you using the trim function?

Hmm, I had to Google that :scratch:and having read a little bit, I'm guessing not as I didn't know it existed.

Is there a short English version of what it is and I'll try it on my next ride?
