Right ok, I'll have a look tomorrow. I don't really cross my gears - i'm not fit enough to need any of them above the 3 lowest ones yet! My old bike was very low geared triple - I could fly on that in top gear. This one... not so much

I've decided to get a tool kit and do it myself. Any good books I should look at?

if its a shimano go to http://techdocs.shimano.com/techdocs/index.jsp for detailed instructions.
if its SRAM go to http://www.sram.com/service

follow the links for bike type and the mech instructions are all there. used in conjunction with the videos it really is quite easy.

one good bit of advice though. DO NOT ALTER LIMIT SCREWS UNLESS THE CHAIN IS FALLING OFF THE RINGS. they very very very rarely move so this will not be the issue. its just indexing. sometimes i wonder if the move to indexed gears was a step forward. I remember the down tube friction shifters and feeling for the gear. you could tweak any noise away really easy.

Make sure your chain is lubed as well. With all the salt on the roads it is very easy to end up with a slightly stiff link or two if there is insufficient lubrication on your chain. This will cause chatter and a jumping chain.

good point. when i refurbed SWMBOs bike i couldn't get the changing right and tracked it down to 1 seized link. fixed it by removing it and putting in a quicklink.

It's Shimano - but I don't know which series it is. It's a 2010 Carrera Virtuoso - It says on

several different types - I'm not so sure.

The chain and associated parts always kept clean - I white spirit the chain, alternating with water then drying it out thoroughly before lubing it with Finish Line Wet (The green one).
