Don't be an idiot.....change them before they get worn. I pulled my left foot out whilst accelerating past 27mph out of the saddle...How the hell I stayed on I don't know...As I ride fixed clipping back in was an interesting experience too.

What type of cleats were they?

LOL never ever realised you needed to replace these

i was using shimano cleats and then i went to pick up my new bike and they swapped thema round for me with new Look Keo cleats i think there called.

Mr borther had to walk 5 miles home one day because he didnt carry spare tubes with him in his cleats, think i will advise him to replace them now!

p.s Well held that man

Dependent upon which cleat system you use, you can get cleat covers to use when you are in walking mode. I have a set for my Looks when wearing my road shoes. Saves cleat wear & tear so your cleats last a lot longer.

SPD all the way for me. Cleats are recessed, so you can walk in the shoes. I did a 3 hour hike in SPD shoes once. No problem at all.

Of course, apart from my normal road shoes with look cleats (that I use the covers for), I have Look cycle shoes with the cleats recessed, where one set of cleats has lasted five years... and still work and I can walk normally in them

I have spd's on all my bikes simply because they make it easier to walk when required. I have a pair of "road" carbon soled shoes for my racers and a pair of more robust trainer type shoes for my MTB.

Count me in as another one using recessed cleats.
I've got some carbon-soled Shimano shoes that I use on the MTB and my road bike. All three of my bikes have got Crank Bros Candys so I don't need to match the shoe to the bike. It's not 'purist' but it works a treat and in any case I'm not out to race - I feel very confident clipping in and out whether on or off road. And like others have said, you can walk in them! I also have a pair of 'casual trainer'-style Shimano shoes that I can wear to work, so I don't have to wear the stiff soled ones all day, or carry office shoes in a rucksack.

Point taken about replacing the cleats as per the OP though - mine have been heavily used over the years and are getting a little bit loose.

Yes. I, er, should do this too.

Pulled out while accelerating away from a traffic light and kicked my front wheel hard enough to buckle it. Stayed on the bike, but it was definitely a surprise (and a slower ride home, what with the wheel rubbing ont he brake block every revolution)

What signs do you get when they're on their way?

I mean do they pop out of the pedal easily? Make funny sounds?
