In these economically bleak times, having a cake and not eating it is a shameful waste of good food !

But back to the OP - I'd agree with the others about setting the pedal tension to its lowest and then forcing back the sprung rear catch. Otherwise, are you able to unscrew the front part of the cleat 'cage' on the pedal ? I have a set of Shimano M-520 SPDs and you can remove the front part of the cleat retaining metalwork. That might do the trick too.
