Hey everyone,

Just had my new pedals fitted (so glad to get those nasty plastic toe strap pedals of the spesh ;)) and i'm now trying to get the hang of clipping in a clipping out. there seems to be a lot of movement and adjusment availiable in the positioning of the cleat on the sole of the shoe, where should it go? any other clipless related advice much appreciated

thanks

set it so that when clipped in your pedal spindle is under the ball of your foot. side to side movement for me was a bit of an expoeriment. i put them on roughly then went for a 7 mile ride. my knee was hurting a bit so i moved the cleat out a bit and they have been perfect ever since. also as a rough starter idea sit on a stoll and let your feet dangle. make a note of your feet's natural position and set your cleats up so that you feet are in the natural dangling position when clipped in

Everyones feet are different - thats why they provide the adjustment.

Take an allen key on a ride and listen to your feet. They soon let you know if they are clamped at an uncomfortable angle. Then it's just down to trail and error till it feels right.

thanks guys, that website was helpful HLaB. i got bored of trying to clip in and out leaning against the radiator in the hall, through caution to the wind and headed outside. after a few laps round the block it started to feel really easy and natural, can't believe i was so worried about having a 'clipless moment', think i have the hang of it already ;).

Yes but I dont think that was down to cleats as I had done 500 miles trouble free with them before my knee went yesterday.

Were you by any chance in a big gear YC?
When i first started riding fixed my knees felt abit achy, which was down to me putting alot of power through them, which they werent used to. My knees are now used to it and i can push a huge gear on the Giant without any problems.;)

I messed around with cleat position a lot recently. In all honesty, I found the fore-aft position not so important (for comfort) and could ride painlessly with cleats in any position. Sure, it felt different but no knee pain. The left-right (lateral) position was a different matter. I found it more comfortable to have cleats towards the outside of the shoe (so feet closer to the cranks)...but, as said before, it's a personal thing so I'm not recommending that for anyone else.

As it happens, I've got my cleats further back on my shoes and not under the ball of the foot as often recommended. I just happen to prefer it that way but could equally ride more on my toes.

It's also worth noting that I have maximum float cleats set quite loose, so I can move my foot sufficiently to allow it to sit naturally. That is, I didn't need to pay attention to the 'angle of the dangle' (my left foot is slightly toe in but insufficient for me to need to match that in cleat position).

Your knees make no sence Steve, the smallest gear i used today and yesterday(and i had big hills i went up, some short and steep, other long and steep-ish) was 50-19:becool: Bigger then the gear on my fixed, but my knees are fine. They are used to alot of pressure being put through them though.
Your knees make no sence YC, you gone to doctors yet?

There was infact a strong headwind on sunday here YC, probaby about that, and had long drags of hills, and went along into the headwind on a slight uphill powering. Its the power in these legs YC, you know i also bent the spider on that crankset aswell as the chainring:becool:
Feel sorry for you YC, i would hate my knee to just go.
