Wot MattHB said above. Sit on a kitchen worktop and dangle your feet. The angles that they point at should be the same angles that they sit at when you are fixed to the pedals. Each foot may be different. My left one points straight ahead but the right one is angled inwards by a few degrees. As for the fore/aft position of the cleat, I just felt for the widest part of the edges of my foot, drew an imaginary line between the two points, and fixed the midline of the cleat on it. Maybe I got lucky, but foot/knee pains have been no problem so far.

Good luck.

Will remember that for the next cleat replacement ;)
When swapping cleats i spray the sole of the shoe with spray paint , take the cleat off and it leaves a perfect outline to match the new one up to,
This doesn't help you but thought i would say it anyway

I like the idea, but would you not be better off making small marks in pencil around the cleat? At least that way you're not spraying paint all over the place, and on a potentially expensive pair of shoes!

I thought that but it was ok, as long as your not trigger happy

Surely a bit of chalk would be better? It would just rub off once you're done if you don't want anything permanently there.

Tippex does the same job with considerably less effort and mess - just dab a few spots around the outline before removing the cleat.

(other correction fluids are available)

Little update: had a play about with them and then went out for a ride, left foot is perfect but I'm getting a sharp pain just under the ball of my right hand foot. I stopped to adjust the cleat three times throughout the ride but ended up having to pedal home with a very sore foot
