Light oil comes off with ordinary soap and a nail brush. A very small amount of degreaser plus nail brush works for the heavier gunk. If you've been fettling it's quite possible that there will be degreaser close to hand.

Now to me that is a pottery term - tidying up the bases of thrown pots and the like, but I have a sneaking suspicion it means something else in biking terms..:reading:

a little tip ive learnt seeing as i'm an engineer who has permanent oily hands in work,
spray some wd40 on your hands and rub in before using swarfega.
It breaks down the oil first before the swarfega. works for me every time

Disposable gloves here, always have a pair in the saddle bag too for on road repairs :thumbsup:

Don't want my delicate little hands getting dirty :girl:

There's a sister product to Swarfega, advertised as ,"Swarfega with balls" and is called Tufanega. It has little grit balls in it to work into those creases.
