I only rip the wheels off every now and again to get a proper clean.

That's not fetishism, just good sense!

The muck from roads corrodes wheels and spokes, and if it's really bad can get into the bearings. So getting the wheels off, cleaning the gunge off, loosening off the bearing cones to take a look and if the grease is discoloured clearing it out and replacing it, adjusting the hubs correctly, and putting it all back, is a mechanical maintenance task, not a cleaning one!

I've cleaned my bike more in the last 5 months than i've cleaned my car in the last 5 years.

The car is a tool to get me from A to B.
The bike gets from from A to B faster, and cheaper than the car. And it's a damn sight more fun.

Actually, I might sell the car. Less to clean. More time to spend on the bike!
