Steph,

Halfords returns policy says that you can return goods within 28 days with receipt & packaging. Not sure if that includes bikes but definitely worth asking.

Have you talked to the people you're doing the ride with - if some of them are keen cyclists they may know of a second hand bike that would suit you. Or Recyke Y Bike in Byker refurbish old bikes and sell them second hand.

will soon find out if I can return it really hoping they can do something and besides if they are willing to exchange I'm spending more money in there store on a better hybrid ;) xx

Good for you.
IMO when you take all into consideration, eg fit, ride, quality etc, bikes of this value are pretty similar regardless of if they be hybrids or mtb, and for the price, I have seen a lot worse than the jewel.
Can I suggest you take it back for its free 6 week check and it might be an idea to arrange this through the guy you saw today so you have a contact that you have confidence in.
Also, if you are going to change the tyres ( good idea ) they usually charge £12 labour for the fitting front & rear, but if you buy their Care plan for 1 year @£19.99 you will get free fitting for this job and any other labour in the year, plus a free general service at a later date ( just before your charity ride? ) which is usually £30 i think.
It pains me to promote them, but for you it would be a very good deal.
Shame the Olympics are this year, otherwise I would look out for you in the Ladies road race, just a bit to soon for you. ha ha !

We need toremember that £90 may be all that the OP could afford to spend on a bike. It's not a wonderful bike, but it may well suit her needs. She will probably find that things like gears and brakes are not easy to keep well-adjusted because of the quality of the parts, but if it is looked after and not left out in the rain it should do the job.

my budget was around £100 but since exchanging the bike i piad a little more for a diff one i know its not much for a bike but as its just me starter bike it will do for now.. im hopein to save and get a better bike just guuna save up for a few month n go to the lbs when i have some money

Definitely. Half of what makes a good bike good (or a bad bike bad) is the maintenance. I have a cheap hard tail bike I use for winter commuting, and the odd trail run, sporting low end Shimano components - but it still serves me well after 5+ years of proper care and maintenance...

Although it's a tad on the heavy side.

with £140 I'd do a bit of homework on what you want, search on e-bay and then do a bit of research on the bikes that take your fancy just to make sure you don't pay over the odds.

I've just brought a bike for my other half on e-bay this way, the bike I was bidding for had a full rsp of £300+, I've just paid £83 for it. I'm gonna collect it this weekend and first stop next week will be the LBS for a service;. Fingers crossed its a bargain!!
