Generally speaking I loathe Christmas and find shaving a bit of a bind although I am invariably pleased with the results of the latter and occasionally with the fallout of the former.

This year part of the fallout came in the form of a hemisphere of shaving soap housed in a good looking, lidded wooden box. So for the first time in my life I was in a position to use my shaving brush, a previous Christmas present. (Top tip girls: if you're going to give a bloke a shaving brush do remember to give him a thing of shaving soap with it.)

Anyway the thing is that it is really good: the brush allows one to delineate the target area with much more accuracy then smearing on foam and the foam seems to be much less clogging on the razor. All in all a result and it would appear that retro is the new future!

I've always secretly wanted to give the old stylee shaving kit a go...
Perhaps I'll off and get a soap & brush set in the new year as I really dislike the shaving gels in a can... like covering your face with a plasticcy goo.
was there any branding on this soap?

you never know, I might have something similar waiting for me! I'm still waiting for my wife to get up!

Merry christmas!

Go the whole hog Andy, and get a cut throat razor to go with it. I've not really used one myself, except for a try out a couple of times, but some people say it's the best shave you can get!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is made by a firm called Crabtree and Evelyn and the "model" name is Nomad. Of course I now need to find a shop that sells refills.

Keith, thanks for the suggestion but I'm so dopey in the mornings that a cut throat razor could well end up living up to its name.

I have tried various methods, but have settled on a scrubby type fash wash, King of Shaves oil, always a clean sharp razor (currently gillette) and then moisturise!

works well for me and I dont get half the ingrowing hairs I did in the past. Bit of a faff mind. Have tried electric shavers, bowl and brush and all sorts in the past.

Crabtree & Evelyn stuff is sold in Beales/Bentalls shops – not that there are any of these in Germany of course. They probably also sell it in KaDeWe which is too far away to be any use to you but I have a strong memory of seeing their hand soaps, at least, in Kaufhof/Karstadt (can't remember which). For the English chappies, no doubt Harrods would oblige!

Crabtree and Evelyn stuff is good, as is proper shaving.
My closest shave comes from my cabinet making chisels, definately as sharp as or sharper then a cut throat razor.

Now you mention it I've seen the name all over the place without actually taking any notice of it and I've got a feeling that Karstadt will have their stuff. They seem to be in airport duty free areas a lot too.

Much cheaper to go the traditional path as well as(for me) amuch nicer shaving experience. I'm still using a pot of shaving soap I got last year from here. Think its some sort of mistletoe fragrance, but you can pick whatever you fancy. Owner sells on ebay as well.
Also used Trumpers in the past

Now all I need is the nerve to get a cutthroat.....
