Hi Barney

There should be plenty of hybrids to choose from in that price range. I started off on a Specialized one and it served me very well! Will all of your riding be on roads... have you considered a road bike with drop handlebars?

I have recently got into cycling and have bought a Sirrus Sport which I am very happy with. It ticks all the boxes for me at the moment, but I will probably buy a road bike eventually. My only concern would be off road riding, the wheels are for road use and I'm not sure how they would cope with any rough terrain.

Giant Escape range is another to consider, i have one, very fast and goes on allsorts of terrain.

I nearly bought the 26" wheeled Escape but i was temted to go for a seconhand Cannondale Synapse flat bar road bike instead

It's very fast but in hindsight i wish i'd bought the Escape

Hi Barney

For that sort of money you would get a very nice Dawes Discovery 501 or 601. They do them in 22" and 23" for us bigger fellas !

The best way to chose a bike is to find a good LBS and try as many as you can, if they won't let you try before you buy then walk away and never go back...
