Japanese (JIS) axle tapers are fatter than European (ISO), so European* cranks do not fit so far onto Shimano axles. Conversely, Shimano cranks fit further onto European axles. As long as (a) there is enough of the axle in the crank taper and ( the crank bolts pull up tight before bottoming, you'll be all right; but chainline will be unpredictable, so it's a suck-it-and-see job.
*An exception is Stronglight Impact, which are actually made by Sugino and are JIS taper
