Chimney repairs - builder or roofer?

Chimney stack needs repointing, maybe more - it's looking a bit sorry for itself, to say the least. I said we need to get some builders to have a look at it; my missus insists it's a job for roofers. I tend to think of roofers as being more slates 'n that. Any thoughts?

Look for Roofers that also do roughcasting , usually advertised as roofer/roughcaster in their adverts.

Roofers seem to have a reputation for being a bit more fly-by-night. I see adverts for people specialising in chimneys. Get an inspection and quote from several people. It's possible that more than just pointing is required.

Whichever you choose make sure they are legitimate. I had someone knock on my door wanting to repair the pointing on the chimney stack. I knew it was ok. Still got the hard sell but sent him packing (to much abuse). Heard later that a lady along the road was almost ripped off to the tune of several hundreds of pounds. The thing that saved her was her bank contacted the police when she went to draw the money out.

I'd call a bricklayer myself as pointing is what they do all day . They probably wont do the job without scaffolding but will put you on to someone they know .
Chimney sweep will also be a good bet as they kinda know about chimneys .

Have you seen sp99's house though?

Um...it's mostly repointing, but I'm pretty sure this bit didn't used to be there. So that might need moving & mounting too.

When you say 'someone they know', d'you mean someone they know who'll do it without? I suspect you're right that most would specify scaffolding, but I also suspect that would double the cost of the job. It's basically a few hours' work, but my guess is scaffolding would cost hundreds.

That's knacked, new one required. You may not need scaffolding depending on how much work there is to do, it's acceptable to work from a ladder providing it fits in with HSE guidelines.

Yes , someone that will do it without . Personally i wouldn't even walk on a roof without scaffold but others wouldn't hesitate .

Mainly a builder's job if you want to be sure it looks neat when finished.
Where about do you live ?..........I am sure there will be a CCr who can recommend someone in the area.

I would charge around 1K for a domestic chimney, more if there were other protrusions on the roof or conservatory below.

If you do call a builder, he will more than likely send a roofer to do the job. Make sure that they come recommended as I've seen some bodges that would make your eyes water. Don't assume expensive is best.

Thanks, that's helpful. Would that 1K include scaffolding, or would you be ok working without it? (Slate roof, as you can see, but easy access via a Velux.)

Oh, and just in case, N/NE London (so within easy reach of Herts/Essex) if any CC'er does know of anyone in that neck of the woods.
