I wanted to join the Royal Navy, sail the world in great big grey warships with big guns.... Nearly did too.. until I discovered girls and beer.. that was the end of that dream. Still regret it to this day I didn't join the armed forces.

I wanted to be a Lollipop Man. Stepping out in front of the traffic with a pair of mirriored shades, leather boots and a high viz jacket, thrusting the lollipop out in front of me. You can't get more glamorous than that.

From a very early age I wanted to be an engine driver. So after getting my CSE's in 1974 I joined B.R. as a traction trainee, qualified as a second man in 1976 and passed the exams for a driver in 1979. 34 years after joining I am still very happy doing what I always wanted to do.

As for the astronaut bit, if I was offered a one way trip in a deep space probe to do a planetary tour for the rest of my life, recording and monitoring the latest discoveries in the solar system before heading out into the Oort cloud I would take it, no questions and no regrets.

I'm with you 100%.......ah, except for the fact that I now have a family to look after. Hmmmm. So how much is the return fare......

I did fancy the truck driver thing too. I took my C+E test in 1995 in a rigid and drawbar and 'sacked' the examiner. He asked me to drive on the motorway and I told him I wouldn't as it was not legal on test. We argued and he failed me. I wrote to DVLA who then told me I hadn't failed and refunded my test fee, suspended the examiner and refunded all the fail fees from his tests. At some point I need to retake the test. It is now legal to test on Motorways if they are in the test area.

I wanted to travel the world in a landrover or a yacht and be a secret agent.

So I bought a yacht at 21, a landrover at 41 and I've travelled the world, can't say who I work for though ;)

Why not? it's a great job!
For what it's worth, I had two ambitions as a child. One was to be a truck driver, which is all I can remember wanting to do when I was very young and which (after a degree and an M.Sc.) I now do, and the other was to be a professional musician, which is what I do on weekends. So all in all, I'm pretty happy.

I was determined to become an artist since my first competition win when I was five or six but attending art college for four years got that out of my system. After college and with no idea of what I wanted to do, and since I had an interest in bikes and had some Saturday part time experience I got a 'temporary' job in a bike shop. Which lasted for over twenty years! Eventually got so fed-up with the rubbish wages that I retrained as a plumber, hated it and then, thankfukc, landed this job.

Might take up painting when I retire though.

Ma Fether never forgave me for not 'getting a trade' or joining the 'services', which was odd because he had never forgiven his Fether from forcing him to do both rather than let him attend art school. But then he was an arse.

When I was quite young I wanted to be a long distance lorry driver and I still look at big artics with longing eyes. However I also wanted to travel and so that's what I've done for most of my working life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
