FWIW.... I happened to agree with what you posted on Calibanzwei's thread.

You seem to happy with your own chain & freewheel in it's present condition, and your means of checking it on a regular basis, so why post? - and reference a previous disagreement ?

For all your protestations to the contrary, it looks like a rather obvious attempt to re-open an old argument.

I spent a couple of hundred quid on a bike called a Vitesse Sprint a few months ago to commute on. It has a really cheap 7 speed freewheel. I have so far done almost 2000 miles on it and the freewheel is fine. There are some signs of wear but not enough to worry me yet.

Looks fine to me, years ago when I was on 6 speed, I would change the screw on freewheel and the chain every 12 months, around 2-3000 miles, I found that the chain would start slipping at around eighteen months.

I use a tape measure and 12 links measure one foot exactly

the general wisdom (it seems to work for me), is change the chain before you get to 0.75 on a gauge or 12 1/16" on a tape measure (i use a gauge, easier on the eyes). you should expect to have 2 to 4 chain changes per cassette, depending on quality and type of usage.

i tend to find on the brompton in winter my chains last 800 to 1000 miles, in summer double that.

my shimano 105, +1500 miles and one chain so far.

my fixie +1100 miles no wear as yet on the chain.

on my 5 grand mtb i had with full xtr kit, the cassettes lasted 2 chains with 2000 miles per chain but, it was used for 95% off road in really shitty rossendale tracks.
