Cheapest diet that will keep you alive

With the recession biting, I've been doing some calculations and I reckon that the cheapest diet would be one of dhall, stale bread and remaindered fruit and vegetables. It would be tedious but it would keep people alive until the economy picks up. What do you think?

How much does it cost to Oldham?
how much does it cost to shoot a pheasant?

Why stale bread? Do your local shops sell it cheaper than the slightly more palatable cheap sliced white fresh stuff?
Think I'd add baked beans too (not expensive in discount supermarkets), and if you stick 'em on the bread you wouldn't even notice it was stale ;)

Every time I go in to my local Sainsbury's I see a crowd of people who seem to be road-testing their own survival plans already , jostling for position in the scrum that invariably surrounds the 'sell-by date discount' cabinet.
I managed to elbow a few of them out of the way recently and got some yoghurts at 9p each

You're fit. Eat in restaurants and see if they can catch you when you leave without paying. If not, Dine and Dash as it's known in Scotland. If so, you'll get away with it many times as they won't want to send you to prison what with the overcrowding in there. I think you're on a winner with that strategy actually. Food, excercise, excitement. Brilliant.

... and when they do send you to prison, you'll get fed for free.

Let's ALL go to prison and stay in there till the end of the recession. Let's let the government take the strain. After all, they're like hotels or holiday camps. According to the Daily Mai they are anyway.

There are some really cheap ways to live.

But then, a whole chicken can do a good number of meals in of itself, more if you're willing to butcher it into various cuts, then you've got the bones you can boil to make stock/soup, ect.

As long as you don't pig out on huge portions, and just use it as an addtional you could get a weeks worth of meal add ons out of it. Add some spices and you wont get bored anytime soon.

Getting the ballence right can be tricky if you suddenly cut out all the "expensive" parts, but when you start using expensive addtions in proper portions the cost shrinks to a managable level.

I'm not veggie, but I use dehydrated soya to bulk out my meals cheaply. (1kg for £2, rehydrates to 4kg, bargin)

Why involve a shop?
Grow it yourself for nothing.

You should be able to keep yourself in eggs and chicken on leftovers (from a restuant) and grow spuds and veg. I grow a bit but not enough for a year. Probably keeps the family for two months of the year.

Grain is the bugger to grow and process so you are left with buying flour.

If I am cycling along and I see a new roadkill (deer or something fairly big) I do sometimes think I could pop back in the car and get it and chop it up for the freezer but I have never felt quite up to it.
