See this. Chance is good that once the crank bolt is removed (likely with an allen key), chainset will wriggle free.

Are you sure 3 chain rings is cheaper than a (comparable) chainset?

The Shimano Deore M590 is £57.99
The individual chainrings are £51.97
I suppose for £6 I could just as well get the whole set.

Any idea whether I need the 170mm or the 175mm?

Cheers.

That's Hollowtech II
So the crank extractor for splined will be redundant after getting old one off. You will however need a (completely differnt) HTII tool to get the new one one.

Looks like the BB on the crankset is Hollowtech II, so I guess I'd also need a Octalink BB tool to get the old one out, and then a Hollowtech II tool to put the new one in. http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=42809

So maybe I should go back to plan A of getting the individual chainrings.

No need for description. The big round hole in the middle of the M590 where the spindle would have gone says it is Hollowtech 2, meaning you need a HT2 bb tool unless you have one already.

Obviously it is your money etc., but I would be surprised if blindfolded you can tell the difference between the M590 and the £30 M443 direct replacement from sjs. However, is your bb in good condition?

If you haven't got many bike specific tools already, it might be cheaper in the long run to buy a tool set.

If you want individual chainrings then I might be able to help as I want to buy another Alivio chainset, we could share the price, here:-

http://www.parker-international.co.uk/5561/Shimano-Alivio-M410-4-arm-Chainset.html

if you buy this then you can keep the rings and bolts and send me the two crankarms, I'll pay £15 for my share of the deal.
