Wow that is really crap! On my motorbike a chain+sprockets typically lasts between 15000-20000 miles................... I was expecting something like 5000 miles at least for a cycle chain tbh.
I wonder how long your motorbike chain would last if it had to wind its way around a set of jockey wheels and bend sideways enough to move across 7/8/9/10 gears?

A chain checker! Well you learn something new everyday. Just googled it and watched a simple video on youtube about how to use one. Guess that's my next cycling purchase sorted. Thanks

I usually get around 7500 miles to my cassette/chain/middle ring, which are changed together. This is on a 7-speed touring cycle, which is at times loaded with camping gear. One year I forgot to check it and accidentally got 9500 miles when I noticed how sloppy it had become! I used to use Sram chains but have had two recently snap when the side plate broke.

Very hard to recommend a idea mileage a chain and cassettes will last, so many factors involved, use of cycle, type of cycle, weight of the rider and his or her riding style and under or over maintenance. Most generic chain and cassette makers are the same people that provide the named products. In the many years (55 ish) I have been cycling I have never broken a chain (that's a dangerous statement to make) personally from my experience I junk the chain at 3000 miles, with the Cassette I replace it when the teeth are showing some wear, sometimes at the same time as the as the chain. You can over clean your chain, If you are cleaning it every few rides you must make sure that when you relube the chain, the Lube gets into the rollers otherwise you will wear your chain links hence the more likely hood you will break a chain.
