Well, you don't pay a bean for your search engine so that means that you are the search engine provider's product that it sells on to other 'service providers'. Hence you get hit with loads of advertising to tempt your money out of you.
If everyone ignored the adverts and the advertisers had no business from it then they would stop advertising by those means and the search engine provider will withdraw services unless it is paid for by the you, the consumer.
All these internet companies, face book, google, you tube, my space, twitter, etc. are all funded by speculative investment. At some point they will all need to be able to finance their investments while having no tangible product other then the information they have gathered from their 'users'. So they sell 'you' to cover their investment costs.
