If you use Google, you'll probably have half-noticed a little message they've been putting on screen lately saying something like 'We're changing our privacy policy. This stuff matters.' If so, you might, like me, have clicked through to a bunch of small print, vaguely thought 'I suppose I ought to read that', then clicked back to your favourite crochet blog.

A bloke in this weekend's Guardian quoted a colleague's illustration of what it all amounts to.

Basically, there's all these different bits of google - the search, the maps , the email & so on - but they've always been silo'd. So if you search for a lawnmower, next time you search, you're likely to see ads for gardening implements. I guess we've kind of got used to that, and don't find it too sinister. It can even be helpful.

Well now, those nice chaps at Google have decided they can be even *more* helpful, by breaking down the walls between the silos. So, for example, if you use your googlemail account to send an email to a friend saying 'I'm pregnant!', don't be surprised if the next banner ad you see is for babywear....

Now, how helpful is that...

You can switch it off and then you just get adverts for random stuff. I prefer random stuff as they are not telling everyone to send me loads of adverts for bikes, electric motors and farming implements.

I am more concerned that Google wants to know the contents of my diary!

They don't bother me particularly. What concerned me is that unlike Google where although they are now using your data across all their platforms, it's still your data. On Bookface, any data stored on their systems is their data not yours. That's a bit scarier to me.

Google is slowly taking over the world. Anyone logged on to the Android Market in the last couple of days? It's now Google Play.

One day a thousand years in the future the fate of humanity will be settled on the outcome of a war between Google Robots and Apple Robots.

You think humanity will still be involved? Your faith is touching...

How do I do that?

Its been bugging me for ages as I much prefer random stuff, plus the fact if I'm searching for something already they probably don't need to try and sell it me anyway!

You need to sign in to your google account, if you have one, and then find the accounts preferences to uncheck the advertising preference.

I am reluctant to sign in more then I need to as each time I sign in it interrogates and updates data to and from my phone. Not managed to stop it doing that yet.

It's a bit more complicated than that...

Google is a ten-year-old company. Apple is a 40-year-old company.

Who now worries about Commodore, Spectrum, Myspace, AOL, Nokia, IBM? Those were the Apple and the Google of their day.

Adverts don't bother me when i'm on my laptop because i have AdBlock installed (chrome),it does a good job of blocking the adverts even on YouTube.
For IE9 users opt into tracking protection and that will block adverts too, though it doesn't block YouTube ads.
