If you use Google, you'll probably have half-noticed a little message they've been putting on screen lately saying something like 'We're changing our privacy policy. This stuff matters.' If so, you might, like me, have clicked through to a bunch of small print, vaguely thought 'I suppose I ought to read that', then clicked back to your favourite crochet blog.
A bloke in this weekend's Guardian quoted a colleague's illustration of what it all amounts to.
Basically, there's all these different bits of google - the search, the maps , the email & so on - but they've always been silo'd. So if you search for a lawnmower, next time you search, you're likely to see ads for gardening implements. I guess we've kind of got used to that, and don't find it too sinister. It can even be helpful.
Well now, those nice chaps at Google have decided they can be even *more* helpful, by breaking down the walls between the silos. So, for example, if you use your googlemail account to send an email to a friend saying 'I'm pregnant!', don't be surprised if the next banner ad you see is for babywear....
Now, how helpful is that...
