I've just got a Scott speedster for my birthday. The chain is rubbing on the front derailleur. I don't want to mess with the the hi low screws as I always mess this up. Could it be for another reason ie the cable being too tight/loose. Not sure what to do about it

You won't after watching this....................

Not sure what to do about it
Or, and assuming it's new, take it back to the shop

My inline adjuster doesn't seem to quite do the job. Recon it's just a bedding in period. Didn't have this problem with me last bike

If you can't adjust it enough with the inline adjuster you will have to undo it at the FD, put it in the small chainring, undo it pull it fairly tight do it up again. If its still rubbing adjust your high limit screw by turning it anticlockwise.

When you say its rubbing its not just in small/small, big /big combination is it?

It does it in small small. Small big and big small. From what I can remember. I'm not with it right now. I'll try adjusting at the cd. I'm always weary when dealing with gears. If it's not sorted I'll just take it in the local shop

Shouldn't do it in small big or big small. Do it yourself, its easy and satisfying when you have sorted it. It can only be cable tension or limit screw adjustment.

There are many possible reasons and incorrect alignment of the derailleur itself is one. Often, on the stand, everything can work correctly but off the stand, when you sit on it, the frame is slightly distorted and it rubs. The cable tensioning in line adjusters affect the ease at which you can move between the three front gears. You adjust the tension depending on whether it is difficult to go up or down. The high and low are just to stop the chain falling off. If it is not the derailleur alignment, it may be incorrect tension on the chain. They do stretch and when a little bit loose, can rattle against the side.

I have one bike where, when the chain was on the smallest ring on the front, I culd only use three gears at the back before it rubbed up front. It was incorrectly aligned when I sat on the frame, for which I am too heavy. Resetting the alignment, I have got the number of rub free gears to 5, but the fact is, I am too heavy for the aluminium frame. The middle and top chain rings are OK so it's not a reeal problem. Maybe I could take a link out of the chain but it is a lot of work for almost no additional benefit.

It shouldn't do it in any combination, if set up right, my 105 triple doesn't, in any combo, though you get chain noise in the large front, to larger rear, from around the middle of the cassette, on the middle with the trim I can use all gears, and inner certainly down to 14 (12-27 cassette), never tried 12-13 on the road.

To do the front FD,
1 make sure your on the inner ring,
2 release the cable at the FD, make sure your barrel adjuster is screwed in (should be anti clockwise),
3 put the RD on the largest cog, check distance of the FD cage from the inner ring and the the chain runs without contact,
4 pull front cable taught and clamp at FD adjust barrel adjuster to take up any further slack in the cable (just enough so the cage starts to move)

it should now shift from inner to middle or outer, if triple move to outer and check if still rubbing on outer you can adjust the barrel adjuster a little, but its likely to be the stop, adjust the stop screw and hold the cage with you other hand you will feel which way it goes.
