Hi,

I just fitted a new KMC chain (X10-93) to my 10 speed double compact road bike. The chain being replaced was a Shimano Ultegra 10sp chain.

I am a bit puzzled, because when I cross chain big to big, the chain rubs on the jockey wheel cage, making a terrible clicking sound. This happens on 50/30 50/27 and 50/24 combinations.

I know you are not supposed to cross chain, and I try not to, but the previous chain did not rub against the jockey wheel cage like this one does.

Any thoughts on what's causing this? Here is a pic:

Puzzle game procrastinator!
Perhaps the new chain is ever-so-slightly wider than the old one?

Cross chaining maybe , big ring front and largest cog on rear ? plus the rear mech slightly out of alignment

Those combinations aren't cross chaining. Do you mean - 50/30 which would be, 50/27 might be?

Looking at your photo I would say that the inner cage is bent as just above your arrow, the gap between the tab on the inner should not be that small, which would kick the jockey wheel towards the outside cadge. also combined maybe with worn jockey wheels...Hope you get to the root of the problem and let us know what it actually was....

It has to be a bent cage, as Tojo suggested, hasn't it? Actually, if the indexing is totally out of kilter, I suppose to might make the chain rub in a similar way.

Thank you , but the indexing would not effect the bottom jockey....:shy:

Problem solved. Fitted a new rear mech (10sp 105 for £25 from chain reaction) and everything now working ok. I think the old mech was a bit battered and out of shape.

Loch side.
I'm coming in late on this one but... did you perhaps remove the jockey wheel in the operation. These wheels are directional - not because the bearing only wants to turn in one direction but because the wheels are offset to one side. If you install it in reverse, it moves the chain over to the side like in the photo.
