So my new Boardman road bike is ace. However there is now a fair bit of chain rub going on. Basically in the lowest and highest gears the chain rattles on the front mech which is starting to pee me off. Trimming the gears doesn't stop it. I was wondering if it was a bit of cable stretch because it's a new bike, but the rear gears seem to be shifting ok. Before I start fiddling and possibly making things worse, do I need to play with the high/low limit stops on the front mech, just adjust the rear cable slightly or is it just something that happens on Boardmans?

Sort the high low out on the front mech.

You should have no rub on biggest sprocket and smallest chain ring. Same with biggest CHAIN RING and samllest sprocket.

The rest is trim.

Ride with a screw driver with you the first few times...........

Hope that's OK.. If you get rub further down the gears, then it's trim / time to slap the other chain ring into action.

Cheers Fossy, I thought it was probably that but with it being a new bike I don't want to make things worse.

Ok, so I have it that it now rattles on the highest chain ring when in the largest sprocket at the rear, likewise in the smallest chain ring and the smallest sprocket at the rear it rattles. In the largest chainring and smallest sprocket (and vice versa) it doesn't rattle/rub. I take it this is normal? This is the first compact chainset & road bike I've ever owned so just want to make sure this is normal!

Sounds normal, or near as dammit. Kind of an audible warning that you are at chain extremes and shouldn't be

As long as you have no rattle\rub in any less extreme ranges then all is good.

That is normal. One you shouldn't really be using the extreme two sprockets. But it's normal to trim a little by a quick jab on the front shifter.

Providing your shifters have a trim position available in that front ring. I've just moved to SRAM red and there is only one trim position on the outer ring. My 105 on the commuter has 4 trim positions as it's a triple

Yep, absolutely standard on a Compact Boardman setup. It's the sound of the chain fairy getting ready to nobble you for crossing it too far.
