Hi,

No problem when pedaling forwards but if i ever spin the cranks backwards the chain immediately jumps all over the rear sprockets

Any ideas how to fix this. ?

Ta.

eye up the rear mech from behind with the chain on the big ring and the biggest sprocket. Check with a straight edge that the two jockey wheels are vertical and directly under the large cassette sprocket. .
Wind the cranks backward and watch what happens.

It could be that one of your chain links joints are stiff . If you have replaced the link i would make sure that the joints are really floppy sloppy .

Could be the wrong length BB. could be loads of things.! tbh the easiest way to fix it is to........stop pedaling backwards

Why didn't I think of that

I've been trying to learn some bike maintenance so I had bought an old clunky MTB from the local bike recyling shop and had just finished disassembling and reassembling the complete bike. Looks like I'll need to strip it all down again. Great project for the dark nights

Thanks for all the suggestions and advice. You folks are great.
