Thinking about buying one of those chain cleaning gizmos.

They work on the bath principle where the chain runs through the bath and is cleaned by the rotating brushes.

Regarding degreasing fluid. Would it be a good idea to use the universal degreaser "Gunk" or would cycling specific degreaser do the trick. If so, what is the best fluid to use?

Personally i wouldnt use one. Have a look on here for the mickle method. Its quick, easy and above all works better than any gaget or spray on the market.
Its my own view but i have lovely clean chains on both bikes, slick shifting, and i use chain lube. But that will open up another debate.

FWIW. I heeded the advice from you good people and resisted the temptation to buy what sounds to be potential junk. Invested in some Finish Line Teflon lube and liberated a few cleaning cloths from the Mrs's supply.
Opting for the mickle method (rub, rub, rub, rub, lube, lube, wipe, wipe, wipe) Have to say, the chain is sounding lovely and slick now. Thanks for the heads up on the method!:thumbsup:

Old rags = that t shirt that was nice and new but you fettled the bike wearing it. Now pre coated in oil, just right for cleaning chains.

I've used Finish Line Chain Cleaner with Finisk Line EccoTech Degreaser it works well. I've also used Finish Line Speed Degreaser (aerosol) which is quick and easier if the chain isn't really mucked up.
