Chain cleaning - how often?

Am I missing something? In the 60s and 70s cycles would possibly get the odd look at the weekend. Oil the chain oil in the front an rear axles and bottom

bracket. Where as cars got serviced every 3000 miles. Nowadays cars get serviced 12000miles or more whereas cycles seem to need servicing every

Don't know about that. I built up my first bike in the early 60s - Ted Gerrard Frame, Campag mechs, Tubs etc etc, and I knew every single ball bearing on that bike, every single bolt. I learnt a hell of a lot building it, and that bike was kept absolutely pristine. Of course I was a Meccano boy, like many of my generation, and it seemed a perfectly normal thing to do.

Our lasses bike is at least 15 years old (probably nearer 20) , still on the original chain and I cleaned it today for the second time ever. Turns out one of the black jockey wheels is actually red
