Aren't both those pictures of a press fit BB?

Yes but look at the shape of the BB shell , the top one is more traditional shape that you find on most bikes , the difference is if you drop chain into the bb shell on the bottom pic then the chain jams as the distance between frame and chain ring narrows the closer you get to the bearings resulting in gouges in the carbon shell .

Ah ok. Re-read it. The first time I thought the pictures were meant to illustrate the difference between an external shell and a press fit. Now I understand. I'll get back in me box.

I have a steel frame. I got chain suck a few times when my inner ring was bent and I hadn't realised, and the stay on that side now has gouges in it. Not really a problem on steel - I just rubbed it down and re-painted it with my kids painting brushes. Could be more of a problem with carbon I suppose?

If you have a seat tube of the appropriate size then the Deda Dog Fang does the job very well (and quite cheaply)

The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
Fine on circular alloy and steel seat tubes with an appropriate diameter. No good on fat or non circular carbon seat tubes. The catchers that are fixed to the front mech mount are much better for carbon.
edit - you just beat me to it Ffoeg!

Best price I found was Rose - but only if you are ordering enough to make the carriage charge acceptable! (Or with a new bike - then you'll get a discount and they will fit it for you).

As far as I know the chain catchers were brought out for MTB's as when going over rough ground and moving onto a inside triple front ring you get a lot of chain slap which would maybe carry on through the front mech and cause it to fun over onto the BB even if your stops were set right, I had it happen a few times on rough single track, but never on a road bike..if your stops are set right.....

Many UK roads are as rough as rough singletrack bridleways!

I dropped my chain several times on rough descents despite very careful adjustment of endstops. I fitted Deda Dog Fangs to all 3 of my bikes. I will probably fit a catcher to my new CX bike too, but I am not sure that a Dog Fang will fit; I might have to fit an alternative design.
