Years ago I used to go out with a guy who had a full sus mountain bike, we used to traipse around the same roads we'll be on come Saturday. He picked up a beautiful used road bike and that was that. We went out together a few times but it was a waste of time, he was off like a shot and there was nothing I could do about it, even on the hills.
