Theres one on a cycle route here that has two bands of steel about 3" wide running down it.
I try and roll along them unless it's wet

I can't see the point of some cattlegrids, the one's with ungated bypass roads next to them. If the bypass road is there I'll use it but if not I just go straight over them at a reasonable speed and touch wood I've never had a problem with 23mm tyres.

I think a lot depends on your mental attitude. A bike is basically a gyroscope, and will look after itself if not interfered with. The trouble is, when approaching possible hazards, we tend to tense up and grip the bars, thus interfering with the gyro. Relax and ride with it works, but that, like so many things with bikes, is not what your intuition is telling you.
Take them square on and relax your grip.

NCN67 south of Ripley N Yorks is great for watching different people approaches to cattle grids, although the guy with the road bike who got off and walked round the cattle grid, and then walked across the adjacent cycleway crossing of the A61 did puzzle me no end!
