Oh right, thought you meant having to tighten that screw all the time. Yes I can see there being a problem as the quick release is so difficult to get off it'd be a bit easy to rough it up and the actual mechanism is so flimsy. Yes I can sort of see that. For me though there's one reason not to buy one: the battery life.

I have the EL530 and use it on a mixed route, some unlit and some lit.
On the unlit roads it gives me enough for what I need. For the lit roads it makes no difference other than to be seen by. So I would consider it an okay light.

On the plus side is that I have rechargeable batteries in it and I am only having to charge them up every 2-3 weeks or so. This makes it ideal for my needs and in fact when I needed to buy a light for SWMBO I plumped for another EL530.

Well, based on what's been said, and some digging, I've bought 2 3W Tesco torches, I'll strap them on my handbars and give them a blast Monday, thanks for all the ideas.

If they do the business, then I'll follow up on cable cleats, which look like a cheap/easy way of mounting them.
(If not, I camp quite a bit, so they won't be wasted)

To be honest, looking at them, I'm half inclined to butcher them, just use the light/lens part, and hook them up to a lipo cell (4Ah, prob last the rest of the winter season!).

The LD1100 rear light is very good and well worth getting. However, the HL-EL530 front light imo isn't quite bright enough for un-lit roads. Although it's perfectly possible to manage with a HL-EL530 front light if you want to clearly see where you're going then you need to start looking at some of the more beefier recharable lights systems or something like Hopes Vision 1.

Also, it's definately worth while getting two rear lights. If for any reason your main rear light fails / runs out of batteries you wont notice that it's gone off.

Marinyork, are you talking about the EL600?

Yeap. EL600. Brighter than a 530/520/310/ any other mid range cateye by quite a bit for seeing with. Gets pissed upon by other rechargable systems or torches. For to be seen power, it's not really much better than the mid range beefy cateye ones. When you consider that the battery time on some of the midrange cateyes is about 20hrs and it's 2hrs on the EL600. I therefore think the EL600 is poor value for money. Fairly bright light, just crap battery life and overpriced.

Blackburn Mars 4.0 rear is bright as hell! They're not lying when they say in the description it has to be seen to be believed...looks cool too and has useful different colour side LEDs. Worth a look

The Tesco torches really do the business, this evening I could not only see, but have plenty of time to avoid, two potholes that I went through blind last week (twice!), and even in a couple of "black spots" where previous evenings I could see nothing of the road/path at all, I could see enough to avoid twigs and other debris.

Now I'll see if I can track down suitable cable cleats, or might go the whole hog, butcher the torches and make a proper mount.

Btw, two seems to have been a good idea for what I need, one short range, the other pointing more ahead, gave me a good spread of light over a decent area. I'm not cycling fast, mind, and I'd much rather a "proper" solution, but as I'm strapped for cash at the minute, this will do.
