Outer plate near the roller/ pin. As for not being joined correctly, it was joined with a quick link and the break was no where the link.

But where's the control?I was curious if I wore down a number of chains sympathetically with the cassette, (try to get the cassette to wear down at the same rate as the chains). How far would I get, as in how much could a chain be stretched

so had the metal sheared / snapped or had it twisted and pulled away from the pin ?

You said it "mad observations". I just maintain my bikes and ride them, I don't log how many miles each chain does etc, I've better things to do with my time.
I still won't buy chains off Amazon or ebay. Has to be an online bike shop, or Decathlon for me. I'm also cautious about brake cables - e.g. Shimano - plenty of copies out there !
