I've removed my Shimano CS-HG500 10-speed cassette in order to replace a spoke but the cassette came off with what looks, to my untrained eye, part of the hub. I'm foxed as to what I should do.

Yes that’s the freehub, you can see the pawls

Be careful not to let those pawls [3 springy bits sticking out] fall off and get lost, fix the spoke, then put it all back together again.

You'll have to twist the freehub back onto the pawls in the direction which flattens them inwards. It is obvious when you try it - it only works one way!

Took a bit of a twist and a hefty shove but it worked - phew! Does that mean that the freehub and cassette are permanently wedded? What happens when the cassette reached the end of its natural life?

If it comes apart like that again you may be able to separate the cassette from the freehub body using whatever gripping tool you have, although you’d have to be careful not to damage it.

It is possible that the cassette has created some grooves on the splines of the freehub body meaning it won’t pull cleanly off.
