Does it have to be chrome?
Alloys would have been available late '70's and have a better braking surface
The front wheel is the original chromed one and it has cleaned up very well. I purchased a rear wheel from a local cycle shop (the wheel that came with the bike was beyond repair). The new wheel is alloy and it does not look as good as a chrome one.

I bought a pair of large flanged 27x 1 1/4 alloy wheels from these people to replace the chrome wheels on my Falcon. Not only do they look good, It really did make a noticable difference to the ride, along with much improved stopping power.

Yep I'd stick an Aluminium front wheel in to match the rear, you may need to change brake pads though if it has 'Fibrax' or other similar pads fitted as they're far too abrasive for the softer metal (but needed on steel rims to get any grip in the wet)
